Remember that rhinoplasty is a combination of art and science. In order to achieve the best result, the surgeon must listen to the patient’s wishes for improvement and combine them with his aesthetic standards and skills. The goal of rhinoplasty is to create a natural-looking, attractive nose that balances with the facial features. In rhinoplasty, the goal is to create a nose which will last for a long time and retain its structural integrity as well as its function as an organ of breathing.

When planning your rhinoplasty it is important to consider the need for functional surgery to fix blocked breathing passages. This can be due to a nasal septum deviated, nasal turbinates hypertrophy, or nasal sidewalls moving inwards when breathing (nasal valvule collapse). This part of rhinoplasty could be covered by insurance if there is a problem.

The Surgery

In some cases, rhinoplasty is possible without external incisions. You may be a good candidate for an “Open Rhinoplasty” if your nose needs advanced tip sculpting or reconstruction of the middle part of the nose. Open rhinoplasty involves making a small incision on the bottom of the nose to allow direct visualisation of the nasal elements. The open rhinoplasty scar is usually not noticeable to the patient. Dr. Amir is an experienced facial plastic surgeon who can perform either “open” or “endonasal’ approaches.

Our fully-staffed and certified surgical facility offers a rhinoplasty service that can take up to three hours. Our San Diego rhinoplasty clients will usually go home the same day. However, some patients who have traveled a long distance may prefer to spend an overnight at the Radisson Hotel. The anesthesia used for facial plastic surgery can be either a general or IV sedation depending on the patient’s preference and the length of procedure.

After surgery, you will wake up with your nose covered in a firm external nose splint. This splint is designed to keep the nasal bones in position and protect the nose. The splint is left in place for a week. All patients are given pain medication and a short course of antibiotics to help reduce swelling. The first night is usually a bit stuffy, but you’ll return the next morning to our San Diego offices for a quick post-op appointment and a little gauze will be removed from your nostrils. Then you should be able breathe easily.

Most patients prefer to take at least a week off around the time of their surgery. You can expect some swelling and bruising following rhinoplasty. However, the nose should look great after one week. The swelling and edema that occurs after rhinoplasty will disappear over the course of the first month. However, you may still notice some subtle changes up to three months or even up to a year.
